La balia, riverita, abbondantemente nutrita e ben vestita, si trovava quasi sempre in uno stato di libertà vigilata. Il ritrovo ai giardini con altre balie, sovente della stessa zona di provenienza, era uno dei pochi divertimenti concessi. Non poteva tuttavia avvicinarsi a uomini, anche se suoi compaesani. Si temeva infatti che qualsiasi rapporto sessuale potesse provocare la perdita del latte.

The wet nurse, revered, well-fed, and well-dressed, was almost always in a state of supervised freedom. Meeting at the gardens with other wet nurses, often from the same area of origin, was one of the few permitted pleasures. However, she was not allowed to approach men, even if they were from her town. It was feared that any sexual contact could lead to a loss of milk.
