A partire dalla metà dell’Ottocento le montagne dell’arco alpino diventarono le protagoniste del nascente escursionismo ed alpinismo, attività sorte per iniziativa degli stranieri che si recavano nelle remote vallate alpine per scalare, a scopo esplorativo e scientifico, cime sino ad allora inviolate e/o sconosciute. Questa tendenza, inizialmente considerata insulsa e disdegnata dai nostri montanari, diventò ben presto una fonte importante per integrare il povero reddito locale. Anche il ghiacciaio dei Forni a Santa Caterina divenne un’ambita meta alpinistica e la sua relativa accessibilità favorì la nascita dell’escursionismo femminile.

From the mid-19th century onwards, the mountains of the Alpine arc became the protagonists of the nascent hiking and mountaineering, activities that arose on the initiative of foreigners who travelled to the remote Alpine valleys to climb hitherto untouched and/or unknown peaks for exploration and scientific purposes. This trend, initially considered insulting and disdained by our mountaineers, soon became an important source of supplementing the poor local income. The Forni glacier in Santa Caterina also became a popular mountaineering destination and its relative accessibility favoured the birth of women’s hiking.
